The Whence project will trace the history of our visual arts community, beginning in the mid-seventies to the present. Physically It will fill the back wall of the AD Welcome Center in the form of a five-row timeline.

Imagine this scenario… With their smartphone, a visitor scans a headline/QR code. The article downloads to their phone and immediately starts reading the story aloud. They can choose to listen later and continue scanning other headlines. In addition, all the articles will be on the website to read or listen to at any time.

Execution Steps*

  1. Attach the 3-dimensional timeline to the back wall.
  2. Delineate periods starting in the mid-seventies to the present.
  3. Begin identifying major events in the history of our arts community.
  4. Research what already exists in terms of digitally published articles about our history.
  5. Digitize what is not yet in linkable form and publish it on our website.
  6. Where no information is available, commission articles to illuminate our history.
  7. Publish them in Arts District News, Northeaster and other print publications of interest.
  8. Create QR codes to accompany the headlines.
